EUGENE MUSEUM IN BALI TO OPEN IN SUMMER 2026, ANNOUNCES COLLABORATION WITH ISSEY MIYAKE THROUGH “LIGHT AND SHADOW INSIDE ME” AS A PERMANENT COLLECTION

Bringing a new breakthrough in innovative technical textiles, the project is inspired by Eugene Kangawa’s seminal work Light and shadow inside me (2022–), a series of photograms, which will be presented in a special exhibition organized by A-POC ABLE ISSEY MIYAKE at Art Basel Paris this October. The work will also be permanently installed at the Eugene Museum in Bali, designed by architect Andra Matin, set to open in 2026.

Light and shadow inside me (2022–): Reimagined in Innovative New Textiles
Kangawa’s signature work, Light and shadow inside me (2022–), is a series of two-dimensional works created entirely through light. Earlier variations consisted of paper coated with water-based pigments, folded into polyhedral origami-like forms, and left under the sun for several weeks to produce natural gradations. A later variation—serving as the inspiration for this collection—features monochromatic compositions where photographic paper was folded into similar forms and selectively exposed to artificial light in a darkroom, creating photograms. Kangawa’s technique relies fully on light and shadow as both material and medium, reflecting our bodily existence and what lies beyond it.
